What’s Stealing Your Energy?

Discovering the Secret to Feeling More Energised

Over the last decade or so, this has become something of a personal quest for me – just why am I so darn tired all the time? To answer this question, I’ve seen doctors, had blood tests come back “all clear”, been prescribed anti-depressants and been referred to NHS talking therapy services. Whilst these all served their purpose and helped to some extent, I still found myself feeling more tired than I felt I should be and still wondering just how I could get more energy.

Asking the Right Questions

But maybe that’s not the best question to ask, as pointed out by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love in this linked article which I wished I’d come across years ago: https://www.glamour.com/story/elizabeth-gilbert-advice. Maybe a better question to ask is:

“Where is your energy going?”

Elizabeth Gilbert

Maybe, as Elizabeth Gilbert suggests happened to her, it wasn’t that I needed more energy; I just needed to learn how to spend it more wisely. It sounded so simple, I had to ask myself why I hadn’t thought about it this way before!

Energy Saving vs Energy Spending

When it comes to finances, I consider that I have a fairly good balance between saving and spending. Thinking about it, I’m not so sure I’ve applied those skills to my personal energy bank account quite so well. Over the years, especially through my twenties, I know I invested my energies in things that didn’t serve me well but, at the time, it didn’t really matter because it seemed so much easier to bounce back then.

Fast-forward a few years and those continual poor energy investments have led to some majorly depleted energy deposits that, like with any debt, take time to replenish – a time of “energy austerity”, if you will.

Now, despite a far healthier lifestyle and choices throughout 2019, it’s taken the best part of 12 months to start feeling like my old self and climb out of the red into the black.

Is it Not Just an Age Thing?

To a degree I’m sure it is – but it clearly isn’t just about age as some older people seem to have more energy than those younger than them. Of course we’re all different and will have different demands made of us, but just like with finances, it seems that how we spend what we do have, can make a world of difference to our daily energy levels.

So, Where is Your Energy Going?

Spending some of your hard-earned energy answering this question properly is likely to be an investment that pays dividends in the long-term.

Unhealthy Diets

We know we get our energy from food so the obvious place to start is to clean up our diets. That doesn’t mean we starve ourselves or dive head first into the latest diet craze, but it does mean we stop fuelling our bodies with unhealthy processed foods that take our body a considerable amount of energy to break down. Having said that, be sensible about it. If your body is used to a daily chocolate bar or packet of crisps, start reducing this slowly and gradually so you don’t hit your body with going from a certain daily amount of sugar to none at all. You’ll feel more tired than before that way. Maybe start with a couple of times a week, swap an unhealthy snack for a healthier version and build it up. You want to be aiming for treats to be a couple of times a week in the end but remember, it’s a marathon not a sprint if you want your new healthier food choices to last.

Unhealthy Habits

This one was the hardest for me – smoking, too much alcohol, lack of exercise, too much screen-time. These will be different for everyone and unlikely to be something you conquer overnight. What amazed me when I refrained from my unhealthy habits was realising just how much energy my bad habits were robbing from me. For me, it’s been taking one energy stealer at a time and taking them on one at a time, replacing them with healthier habits, swapping cigarettes for Champix, only drinking around once a month, daily yoga and dog-walks, putting my phone down and knitting, cooking or playing guitar. I found that until I quit smoking and massively reduced the alcohol intake, I just didn’t have the energy to engage in these healthier habits so if you have more than one bad habit like me, it might be worth asking yourself, which you think is robbing your energy most and start with that one.

Unhealthy Environments

It can be easy to underestimate this one – toxic workplace, toxic family, toxic friends – not the easiest thing to change. I spent years of my life trying to convince some people why they should like me and change themselves/their opinions before realising it was a complete waste of my time and energy. Now if I find myself around someone who is toxic, i.e. draining my energy repeatedly, I ask myself are they worth being around.

Of course, we can’t avoid and cut out everybody who is toxic to our energy – we may need that job or they may be a close family member/friend. But we can limit our contact with those people and set clear boundaries. This has been an absolute game-changer for me this year. I find that I have more time to spend with those friends, family and colleagues that I enjoy spending time with which means that when I do have to interact with someone I find draining, I have more energy, compassion and patience to do so. This isn’t about labelling people toxic/non-toxic or only being around those who always agree with you. It’s simply removing or reducing contact with people who you find draining to be around.

Obviously I’m no doctor nor medically trained in any way so obviously speak to your own healthcare provider before applying any of this to your own life or circumstances. If you’ve any tips you’d like to share to inspire others who may be feeling exhausted and run down feel free to add them to the comments below.

Picking your Cards…

Four of Swords Tarot Cards Anne Stokes www.myholisticliving.co.uk

Four of Swords (reversed):

The Swords denote intellect, thoughts, mental stimulation with the four being a time for deep reflection and meditation, musings and pondering. A time to be alone with one’s thoughts to gain a better understanding of a situation.

If you’ve never tried meditation before, this could be a perfect time to give it a try and, with being reversed, suggests to me that is something that you are sorely in need of.

The Empress Tarot Cards Anne Stokes www.myholisticliving.co.uk

The Empress:

A maternal, earthy energy, nurturing and creative. It can of course denote an actual pregnancy or be metaphorical such as birthing a new project or idea.

She is the power behind the Emperor’s throne; a source of inner strength and a wise and loving ruler.

Maybe a time to show your nurturing side – whether to yourself or others.

The Chariot

The Chariot:

A change of energies here, suggestive of a time of picking up the pace, maybe feeling pulled in all directions, forward movement, travel, victory and progress.

It feels as though the end of November could start to get extremely busy for you with you maybe feeling like you’ve taken on too much. Stick with it as the card in the upright position suggests you are moving in the right direction.

Ace of Swords

Ace of Swords:

Another card of the Swords suit. The Ace is the beginning and, being Swords, suggests the beginning of an idea or thought.

Your mind becomes consumed as the seeds of a new idea begin to take hold. Think it over carefully before deciding how to act. Your thinking is likely to be razor-sharp at this time.

The Takeaway

This felt a very clear message for those it is meant for; if you’re feeling burnt-out, stressed, over-stretched, indecisive, unsure or just out of sorts in any way, what have you got to lose by spending 5 minutes a day in silent reflection with yourself. You may be thinking that you can’t spare 5 minutes a day, but as someone who often feels the same, I know my day always feels much calmer and do-able when I take the time to meditate, especially in the morning.

This would coincide with the message of The Empress – nurturing yourself is a way of not only loving yourself but in doing so you are better able to nurture and love others. Meditation is an easy and effective way to do that. Carve out just 5 minutes a day for yourself to sit with yourself and your thoughts and listen to the sound of your breathing. Meditation is not about not thinking. Rather it is to simply observe your thoughts, which will come, and become aware of them. Then bring it back to the present by simply focusing on your breathing.

And you’re going to need those 5 minutes a day to yourself to better handle the faster-paced energies of The Chariot in the latter half of November when you become even busier. Take the time now to establish the habit of meditation and it will pay dividends for you at this hectic time.

The end of November feels calmer again, if you’ve listened to the guidance and messages from your Higher Self and carved out just 5 minutes a day to nurture yourself through meditation, even through the busy times. In doing so, you’ll sharpen your mental strength and might just hit on a fantastic new idea – be sure to think it through from all angles whilst your wits are about you. This is not the time to act but to enjoy the birthing of a new idea.

Until next time…

September 2019 Energy Update: Runes

September 2019 Energy Update: Runes

For this month’s energy forecast, I’ve invoked the ancient wisdom of the Runes instead of the Tarot – those mysterious symbols carved into wood, metal or stone, most commonly affiliated with our Germanic and Nordic ancestors.

Compared with card reading, rune reading is far more simplistic in terms of its imagery but that can make reading the runes a far more difficult task to master. Whilst each rune of course has its own meaning, pay attention to any thoughts or images, people or situations that pop into your mind whilst considering your reading below. Those messages are the ones specific for you.

Your Reading

Runescope September 2019

The reading is broken down into 4-weekly sections or thereabouts:

Week 1

Rune Is

Rune: Is

If you’re at all familiar with the Disney film “Frozen”, you’ll know just what I mean when I describe this rune, Is, as my “Elsa” stone! Foreigner’s “Cold as Ice” song from the Seventies also sprang to mind.

This suggests that there may be a certain coldness or isolation by yourself or those around you at the start of September 2019. A feeling of still being “stuck” in similar energy to that experienced in August 2019. A need for patience at a time when it may be wearing thin. Things will start to move again but slowly.

Week 2

Rune Rad

Rune: Rad

Similar energy to The Chariot card of the tarot, Rad is indicative of journeys. These can be spiritual or physical in nature. However, with the rune coming out reversed, this may mean slow progress and delays.

Some slow progress might be noticeable in your life come Week 2 of September 2019 but you’ll still probably feel frustrated and impatient at the pace. Use this time to do your research, listen to warnings and ensure you’re well prepared for any journeys you’re about to take.

Week 3

Rune Feoh

Rune: Feoh

Abundance is indicated by the presence of Feoh in matters of health, wealth and relationships. Being reversed however could be indicative of a feeling of lack or of something missing.

Right around Week 3 you may be feeling as though something is missing in your life. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing! Noticing that need is the first step in addressing any areas of imbalance whether in terms of a new healthy eating regime, exercise and self-care or taking back control of any financial issues. Relationships of all kinds can benefit from this energy too, as people are clearer about asking for what they truly need from each other.

Week 4 & Beyond

Rune Ger

Rune: Ger

The rune of seasonal changes and harvest comes out just after we celebrate the Harvest Festival on 22 September 2019 here in the UK. This rune cannot be read “reversed”. Similar energy to the Wheel of Fortune card in the Tarot.

Whether Week 4 is a time of celebration of your own particular “harvest” in your own life will really depend on your efforts and perseverance through the slower energies of the past few weeks. Have you been patient and diligent, consistent and balanced in this time or have you tried to take shortcuts and been sloppy? This rune is also associated with the wheel so could be somehow related to the journey of Week 2 or to the Wheel of Life and its cycles. There is a karmic element to this rune too; a time of “reaping what you have sown”, all of which links back itself to this idea of it being harvest time.

The Takeaway

Quite the mixed bag for September then! It pretty much feels a tale of two halves, with the heavy, slow progress energy of August 2019 seeping over into the first week or so of September.

But stick with it – by the end of Week 2 movement of some sort seems evident. A time for making plans and research, the benefits of which will be felt towards the latter part of the month once you’ve had your moment of clarity on anything you feel may be lacking in your life. This is when you’ll begin to reap your own “harvest” from all efforts in all areas of your own life over these frustratingly slow last few weeks.

Don’t shortchange yourself then; no shortcuts, eyes on the prize and hopefully the results of your harvest should payoff.

Energy Vampires & How to Avoid Them

Energy Vampires & How to Avoid Them

My favourite monster-type has always been the Vampire. I read Bram Stoker’s Dracula when I was about 10 years old, watched the film of the same name and devoured as much as I could around the myth and legend of the vampire, eventually even buying a tarot deck based on the undead.

I clearly romanticised my idea of what a vampire was based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the many imitations based on this that have followed through the years; in Eastern Europe where the legend of the vampire is/was most prevalent, the monster was a far-less charming and attractive creature!

What is an Energy Vampire?

Most people no longer believe in an undead, nocturnal, blood-sucking creature that can only maintain its own existence by feeding off the life-giving blood supply of the living. But an “energy vampire” – be assured – these monsters are very much real and, I’m afraid, living amongst us.

“The blood is the life!”

Renfield, Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Energy vampires are those people in our lives that feed off our energies – be those energies mental, emotional or psychic. They love to latch onto empaths, kind-hearted, compassionate, sensitive souls who tend to be people-pleasers.

“There are darknesses in life and there are lights, and you are one of the lights, the light of all lights.”

Van Helsing, Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Take a moment now to think if there is someone that immediately springs to mind in your own life who, after spending any amount of time in their company, leaves you coming away feeling completely drained, spent and off-balance. This is likely to be your very own Energy Vampire.

“The last I saw of Count Dracula was his kissing his hand to me, with a red light of triumph in his eyes, and with a smile that Judas in hell might be proud of.”

Jonathan Harker, Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Energy Vampire Signs:

  • They seem charming on the surface – at first;
  • Are they always gossiping about others? Yeah, they’ll be doing that about you to those others when you’re not around!
  • They’re never happy/always complain – and it’s always someone else’s fault;
  • Constantly competing with others, has to buy the “best” and tell the world about it, show-offs, full of their own self-importance;
  • Attention seekers – will make everything about them, your wedding, birth of your child, where you live;
  • Complete lack of gratitude, has an attitude of entitlement;
  • Insanely jealous of everyone else’s successes and fortunes, cannot be happy for others;
  • Master manipulators – they love to cause trouble and drama for others behind the scenes, especially fond of getting others to do their “dirty-work”;
  • You’ve never heard them say sorry – not once!
  • You’ve only ever heard them give backhanded compliments;
  • They downplay and belittle yours and others achievements whilst bigging up their own;
  • Masters of emotional blackmail, especially of their own children, love to guilt-trip others, victim-mentality/a martyr;
  • Very critical of others, you come away from them feeling bad about yourself;
  • Very opinionated and close-minded;
  • Will not allow you to set boundaries on how they treat/speak to you;
  • Once the charm-offensive stops working, the mask slips and they go on the attack showing their true colours as intimidating bullies;
  • Once you’ve seen through their guise, they will turn on you and try to discredit you to others/turn others against you especially if you call them out on their unacceptable behaviour.

How to Deal with an Energy Vampire

Run! All joking aside though, my strongest advice would be to remove these people from your life asap, or, where this is not possible, limit contact with them to the absolute bear minimum.

Obviously, we can all exhibit these traits from time to time but a person becomes an energy drain when they exhibit several of these traits over a sustained period of time and takes no responsibility/makes no effort to stop their behaviour.

You can try being civilised and talking to them about their behaviour but in my experience, everything will be twisted round to blame you and absolve themselves of responsibility. The true energy vampire cannot empathise with others nor understand the pain that they are causing because they believe that they are entitled to drain you/others of whatever it is that they “need”.

What has been most effective for me though is noting how I have allowed these people to drain my energy. An energy vampire can only take from you what you allow them to take. Remember that you are allowed to say no to people without being made to feel guilty regardless of who they are and they can be anyone: partners, friends, family, employers, colleagues, neighbours. So acknowledge the energy vampire, set boundaries for yourself that you honour and be willing to protect your precious personal energies at all costs.

Failing that, start bathing in garlic – that should keep everyone away!

Feel free to share this article with someone you think is being drained by an energy vampire if you think it will help them, or, if you’ve been attacked by an energy vampire yourself, have you any tips you’d like to share to help others?

Mercury Retrogrades

Miscommunication Likely!

A planet is said to be in “retrograde” when it appears (although in fact is not), to be going backwards due to its position in the sky. As you might guess, this means that during a retrograde period, we can feel as though we too are getting nowhere fast.

The Mercury Effect

Retrogrades can be at their most trying a few times a year when it involves the planet of Mercury. The next Mercury retrograde begins in Leo on July 7th and lasts until 2 August 2019. In both the pre- and post-retrograde period, things can start to feel a little off as we acclimatise to this slower energy.

Mythology

Mercury, is named of course after the Roman God of the same name and linked with Hermes, a God and messenger of the Gods in Greek mythology, both of whom were known for their associations to commerce and trade, travel and communication as well as both being tricksters.

The Leo Effect

Mercury will be retrograde in the sign of Leo, associated with the Sun, creativity, inspiration, self-expression and communication as well as a tendency towards dramatics. However, the Sun itself is currently in Cancer season. Cancer is linked to the Moon that, conversely, can be self-protective, an illusive, secretive nature, emotive and sensitive.

So, What Does it Mean For You?

Well, not to sound dramatic myself, but usually a Mercury Retrograde is approached by most with some trepidation! Generally, approached with caution to avoid chaos and confusion, some of the less cheerful aspects of this energy include frustration or delays, often in matters of business, travel and communication.

Having said that, on the plus, it’s a good time to reflect on the past as intuition is usually pretty strong. This can lead to more synchronicity being noticed by you now and therefore is a better energy for making plans rather than big changes.

Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail

To best prepare for this energy shift now, it pays to be open-minded whilst reflecting to gain valuable insights from the past that can be benefited from during the planning retrograde energy.

How to Ride Out the Retrograde

Once Mercury goes retrograde on 7 July, do what you can to avoid miscommunication and, where possible, avoid entering into contracts or starting anything new. Of course, not everything can wait until after 2 August, so if it’s something you still need to proceed with now, you need to check and double-check the small print to avoid delays and frustrations as much as possible.

Be creative and communicate, expressing yourself; just don’t overdo it. One can be too honest with this kind of Leonine energy or, alternatively, if the Moon is more prominent in your birth chart, you may clam up and hide your feelings when what you need to do is the opposite. Also, as the Moon governs emotions, and Leo is expressive, this might lend itself towards melodramatic responses and behaviours if you react without thinking, so perhaps count to 10!

With all this drama queen, sensitive energy around, it can feel like there’s a “glitch” in the system, something not quite on form or running at full speed, so it can be trying but at least we’ve got that upbeat Leo energy bursting through, full of confidence and self-expression. Even just remembering that this time is trying for everyone can help us be more compassionate with ourselves and others during times of Mercury Retrograde.

But a time as well to reflect and plan as well as wonder at your intuition and the noticeable coincidences so certainly not all bad. Shortly after 2nd August, the energy lifts as Mercury goes “direct” i.e. forward and the glitch is gone.

So instead of dreading the Mercury retrograde, this time I’m going to try and embrace it, especially given some of the other big planetary energy shifts coming up next week (more on this on Monday 1 July). Being halfway through the year, it seems a good time to look back on the last 6 months and take stock of progress and setbacks, to see if we’re on course for where we expected ourselves to be right now at the start of 2019. Crucially, we can then adjust our course to ensure we make up any lost ground or readjust our expectations if needed.

It’s a similar sort of energy to what we’ve had this week already with the Last Quarter Moon in many ways – more on that here:

https://myholisticliving.co.uk/2019/06/24/how-the-last-quarter-moon-energy-could-affect-you-25-june-2-july-2019/

Because it’s a follow on of the same sort of “slow”, reflecting energy of the Last Quarter Moon in Aries, it may feel doubly frustrating. Again, distracting yourself from time to time might be a good way of enjoying the playful Leo energy with close friends and family or those you feel comfortable expressing yourself with. That’s what I plan to do anyway!

On that note, I wish you all a Happy Mercury Retrograde 🙂

Last Quarter Moon Energy: 25 June – 2 July 2019

Last Quarter Moon Energy: 25 June – 2 July 2019

From around 10:46 am (UK time) on 25 June 2019, the Moon will be in its Last Quarter in the sign of Aries.

What is Last Quarter Moon Energy?

We are back in a time of reflection after revelling in the harvest of the Full Moon energy of last week. As such, it can all feel very much an anti-climax; a hangover or comedown.

If we let it, we can be dragged down by this energy into a wallowing in self-pity in any way we feel we missed the mark in the last cycle, or, where we see the lesson in it, we can instead recognise this, see where we can improve and come up with a road-map to be put to use in next week’s New Moon energy, of where you are now and where you want to get to. Next week will be a time to put the finer detail to it but, for now, analyse your progress as a whole since the last cycle, to get a better insight into the bigger picture.

What is Aries Energy?

Aries is the action-man energy of the entire Zodiac. It’s a real “go-getter” feeling; an impatience to get started which is what, in my view, makes this energy somewhat challenging. In our haste to get started, we may not see the value in this time of withdrawal and reflection, instead wanting to not lose the momentum.

The Sun in Cancer Energy

But the Sun is in Cancer which is a much gentler, maternal energy, feminine and deep with their emotions. It is in balancing these two equally powerful energies that is the key to successfully working with them.

It won’t be easy though – Aries is the tell it like they see it energy which will immediately bring to light any areas of disagreement in feelings and actions in squaring the deep-feeling Sun in Cancer.

What to do in the Last Quarter Moon in Aries Energy?

  • Reflect on the good and the bad from the last cycle – what worked, what didn’t, what could you do differently next time?
  • Learn the lessons in your reflections now so as to make better use of next week’s energy.
  • Practice patience – engage in those activities that distract from taking hasty action until a more opportune time presents itself.

The Takeaway:

If you spent at least some time last week enjoying the fruits of your labours, you’re in the best possible position to make the most of these energies having a better appreciation of what worked and what success meant to you. Otherwise, you’re starting point is to do this now – What have you learnt during the last moon cycle? How can you use what you have learnt to continue to grow?

Once you’re armed with this information, you’ve got yourself a basic road map of where you are vs where you’re trying to get to. The equivalent to a Google Maps search; you may not know the detail of how to get there yet but you’re aware of the general direction.

It is also a time to practice patience, which isn’t easy with Aries energy; distract yourself from time to time this week so that you pace yourself. Enjoy the build up to the New Moon’s energy next week, taking time for self-care and recovery from the excesses of the harvest of the Full Moon, which should be enlightening in itself.

Until next week’s New Moon energy….
