A planet is said to be in “retrograde” when it appears (although in fact is not), to be going backwards due to its position in the sky. As you might guess, this means that during a retrograde period, we can feel as though we too are getting nowhere fast.
Retrogrades can be at their most trying a few times a year when it involves the planet of Mercury. The next Mercury retrograde begins in Leo on July 7th and lasts until 2 August. In both the pre and post-retrograde period, things can start to feel a little off as we acclimatise to this slower energy.
Mercury, is named of course after the Roman God of the same name and linked with Hermes, a God and messenger of the Gods in Greek mythology, both of whom were known for their associations to commerce and trade, travel and communication as well as both being tricksters.
Mercury will be retrograde in the sign of Leo, associated with the Sun, creativity, inspiration, self-expression and communication as well as a tendency towards dramatics. However, the Sun itself is currently in Cancer season. Cancer is linked to the Moon that, conversely, can be self-protective, an illusive, secretive nature, emotive and sensitive.
So, What Does it Mean For You?
Well, not to sound dramatic myself, but usually a Mercury Retrograde is approached by most with some trepidation! Generally, approached with caution to avoid chaos and confusion, some of the less cheerful aspects of this energy include frustration or delays, often in matters of business, travel and communication.
Having said that, on the plus, it’s a good time to reflect on the past as intuition is usually pretty strong. This can lead to more synchronicity being noticed by you now and therefore is a better energy for making plans rather than big changes.
To best prepare for this energy shift now, it pays to be open-minded whilst reflecting to gain valuable insights from the past that can be benefited from during the planning retrograde energy.
Once Mercury goes retrograde on 7 July, do what you can to avoid miscommunication and, where possible, avoid entering into contracts or starting anything new. Of course, not everything can wait until after 2 August, so if it’s something you still need to proceed with now, you need to check and double-check the small print to avoid delays and frustrations as much as possible.
Be creative and communicate, expressing yourself; just don’t overdo it. One can be too honest with this kind of Leonine energy or, alternatively, if the Moon is more prominent in your birth chart, you may clam up and hide your feelings when what you need to do is the opposite. Also, as the Moon governs emotions, and Leo is expressive, this might lend itself towards melodramatic responses and behaviours if you react without thinking, so perhaps count to 10!
With all this drama queen, sensitive energy around, it can feel like there’s a “glitch” in the system, something not quite on form or running at full speed, so it can be trying but at least we’ve got that upbeat Leo energy bursting through, full of confidence and self-expression. Even just remembering that this time is trying for everyone can help us be more compassionate with ourselves and others during times of Mercury Retrograde.
But a time as well to reflect and plan as well as wonder at your intuition and the noticeable coincidences so certainly not all bad. Shortly after 2nd August, the energy lifts as Mercury goes “direct” i.e. forward and the glitch is gone.
So instead of dreading the Mercury retrograde, this time I’m going to try and embrace it, especially given some of the other big planetary energy shifts coming up next week (more on this on Monday 1 July). Being halfway through the year, it seems a good time to look back on the last 6 months and take stock of progress and setbacks, to see if we’re on course for where we expected ourselves to be right now at the start of 2019. Crucially, we can then adjust our course to ensure we make up any lost ground or readjust our expectations if needed.
It’s a similar sort of energy to what we’ve had this week already with the Last Quarter Moon in many ways – more on that here:
Because it’s a follow on of the same sort of “slow”, reflecting energy of the Last Quarter Moon in Aries, it may feel doubly frustrating. Again, distracting yourself from time to time might be a good way of enjoying the playful Leo energy with close friends and family or those you feel comfortable expressing yourself with. That’s what I plan to do anyway!
On that note, I wish you all a Happy Mercury Retrograde 🙂
